  • Isn’t it fascinating when people do something that is ‘unlike them’? Well, Tom and Daryll challenged themselves and each other to do just that.

Hair today, gone tomorrow…

Positive challenge is at the forefront at Lab and one of our key values, so what happens when you mix culture and charity? Apparently you end up with a lot of hair on the floor…

We spend a lot of time and energy trying to create and maintain our persona, carefully shaping it throughout our lives. We’ll buy one thing instead of another, consciously curate our behaviour and perfect our vocabulary all to one end: becoming more of who we want to become. But what happens when we consciously interrupt that pattern? Well, at Lab we ended up with a lot of hair on the floor…

Enjoying the spirit of a bit of healthy competition, Tom and Daryll decided to playfully entertain an old-fashioned sales bet and set the stakes quite high: the winner would be able to choose the loser’s hairstyle - which would need to remain unchanged for a month.

You might think that the tension before the finish line would have been the most enjoyable part of the game, but you would be mistaken. The fun really began after Tom won the bet (which happened in the last few days, to Daryll’s dismay) and surprised everyone with his choice...

After his triumphant victory, Tom decided to refrain from giving Daryll the standard mohawk or mullet and swayed towards something altogether more interesting… To give you a bit of context, Daryll, you could say, is the intelligent mad scientist type - more easily associated with Einstein than David Gandy. Knowing this, Tom decided to choose a hairstyle that would be in direct conflict with Daryll’s self-image and create just a little bit of cognitive dissonance.

So Tom gave Daryll the burden of sporting one of the most vanity-suggesting hairstyles he could think of; he gave Daryll a hair piece. Over the next few weeks, Daryll commented on how people kept looking at his hairline trying to figure out whether he was wearing this as part of an image transformation or some sort of mid-life crisis. He dreaded going to industry events where he would run into unsuspecting friends…

In the spirit of camaraderie, Tom wanted to join Daryll in challenging himself and he, too, got a new hairstyle. Admitting to being consciously vain, his haircut needed to be the complete opposite of that: a buzz cut. A few members of the Lab team ended up joining him and by the end of the day, there was a lot of hair in the office… This ended up with the team raising quite a nice sum for MacMillan’s Brave The Shave initiative.

But we know the unwritten rule of the internet: “Pics or it didn’t happen.” So feel free to enjoy the footage of the pivotal day…
